Dean Majd: Greater New York
MoMA PS1
Growing up in Queens, photographer Dean Majd knows the skate park under the bridge, the storefronts on Steinway Street, the knafeh at Al-Sham Sweets & Pastries, the dimly lit hookah lounges, and t he waterfront at Astoria Park. In these familiar places, he began photographing his own life -- documenting friends and everyday moments that shaped his path as an artist.
Majd's photographs in Greater New York include works from two series: Birthmark, images of Palestinian life in New York City, and Separation, created while visiting relatives in the West Bank. Through them, Majd maps out a network of relations between the places he calls home, depicting lives forged at a distance and revealing the strength of these ties.
